How to choose RCCB / ELCB for home? | Why RCCB is necessary for your home ?

Electricity is critical component of everyone’s lives, it comes with its own dangers to human life and equipment.

Electric shock and fire are the two primary risks correlated with electricity.

We cannot be careless when it comes to safeguarding ourselves.

A Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB) is one of the many safety measures when it comes to the stability of electrical circuits.

RCCB is essentially a current sensing device.

RCCB protect any person from electric shocks, along with electrocution and fires.

RCCB’s are operate and trip circuit in a sudden earth fault.

The function of RCCB is operate instantly in earth faults and trip circuit to protect a person from an electric shock.

➢ The current ratings of ELCB are 25A, 40A and 63A.

➢ No. of poles - 2 and 4

➢ Nominal voltage - 240/415V 50Hz

➢ Sensitivities: ELCBs are designed to trip at leakage currents of 30mA, 100mA, and 300mA.

➢ Electrical life: More then 10,000 operations.

➢ Mechanical life: 20000 to 100000 operations.

➢ Tripping time - < 30ms.

👉 Selection of RCCB for home :

Selection of RCCB is based on its sensitivities, ELCBs are designed to trip at leakage currents of 30mA, 100mA, and 300mA.

A human being is able to sustain an electric shock to the extent of 30 mA. While up to 10 mA may just evoke a prickling sensation, 10 mA onwards may lead to muscular contraction, further leading to a respiratory paralysis at around 30mA.

Generally a RCCB with 30 mA sensitivity is enough for a normal home. but if you feel you are having earthing problem in your area and prone to shock you can chose 100 mA.

300 mA is the maximum value permissible for fire protection.

👉Why RCCB is require when  MCB already installed ?

There are two types of electrical faults :

High current - low resistance fault arising due to short circuit and its protected by MCB

Earth leakage arising due to insulation failure of appliance/cable/socket or accidental touch by a human, etc.
Such low-level leakage current cannot be detected by MCB and if no action is taken, it will result in damage to the appliance or fatal to the human being .This low current high resistance faults are detected by RCCBs ,It is here RCCB plays an important role in electric protection.

👉Will RCCB function if earth wire is disconnected ?

For some reasons insulation of live wire weakens in any appliance,

If proper earthing is provided the leaking current pass through the earth wire;

If not, the charge will try to pass through the body of anyone who touches the appliance with instant shock.

But the RCCB will immediately act to disconnect and the damage to the human body will only be a function of the sensitivity and tripping time of the RCCB.
