How to select Inverter and inverter battery for home ?

Inverter is power backup solution for our home or office.

Inverter is very important appliance where the frequent power cuts are there or where continues power supplie is necessary like hospitals,theaters and some process plants.

It is very important to select right inverter and inverter battery for your application.

There is some points to be consider for selection of best inverter and battery size for your home.

Before buying inverter for your home lets do some home work for selection of inverter.

Content :

  • 1) Power requirement.

  • 2) Selection of inverter and Calculation of VA rating of inverter.

  • 3) Selection of battery for inverter and calculation of battery rating.

👉Power requirement :

Power requirement means power consume by your home appliance which are backup by inverter. If you want to backup 3 fan, 3 LED tube light, 2 LED bulb on inverter.

Lets calculate power requirements

Lets calculate our power requirements

                                            Fan = 3 * 80 = 240 W
                                  Tube light = 3 * 20 = 60 W
                                           Bulb = 2 * 10 = 20 W
                                              T.V= 1*1     = 120

Our total power requirement is 440 watt.

👉Selection of inverter and Calculation of VA rating of inverter.

Now we have to select the Inverter which have capacity to take load of 440 watts.

Inverter is rated in VA now we convert Watt into VA

                          Watt = V * I * CosŃ„
                                                              where   V = voltage
                                                                            I = current
                                                                     CosŃ„ = Power factor
Usually our power factor is 0.8 .

                         V.A = V * I

We have 440 watt power requirements

Now inverter rating we require :
                                                                       = 440 / 0.8
                                                                       = 550 VA

The nearest inverter with matching need is 600 VA. So better consider 600 VA inverter to support your power requirement.

The inverter capacity is measured in Volt Ampere, often abbreviated as VA. In all the product description the VA rating is mentioned. Please see above picture on how to identify the VA rating.

👉Selection of battery for inverter and calculation of battery rating.

Battery is a heart of inverter system. It is very important to choose the suitable battery for our power rating.

A reliable battery can provide uninterrupted power supply for longer hours.

If you choose an incompatible battery size, inverter becomes completely useless. So, it is very important to consider certain factors before purchasing inverter battery. Few factors are mentioned below,

  • Battery Size
  • Battery Type

👉Battery Size :

Battery size or capacity is measured in Ampere * Hour ( Ah ). Ah means the amount of current the battery can supply for the specific duration.

For example we have 20 Ah capacity battery that means

Battery gives,

20 A of current for 1 hour
10 A of current for 2 hours
5 A of current for 4 hours
2 A of current for 10 hours

If you wish to have a backup for 6 hours with a 600 VA inverter and battery input voltage of 12 V, the total battery size would be calculated by following equation :

                                                        = 600 * 6/12
                                                        = 300 AH

You can clearly see as the number of backup hours increases the required battery size also increases.

The voltage of battery cell, all of the top brands of batteries have 12V or 12 voltages.

👉Battery Type :

Most of the inverter batteries in India are lead acid based ones. Further, they are categorized into tubular, flat and sealed lead-acid.

There are three types of batteries in the market namely,
  1. Flat plate battery
  2. Tubular battery
  3. Sealed maintenance free battery.

1. Flat plate battery

flat plate battery

This option is perfect if you use inverter occasionally. However, it is not suitable for areas with frequent power cuts.

These batteries are designed using a combination of positive and negative plates that are made using pasted grids. The batteries are not only economical but lightweight too.

Based on your capacity requirement, you can find this battery type within Rs. 8,500 to Rs. 15,000 budget.

2. Tubular battery

They have advanced built construction making it suitable for areas with frequent power cuts.

The tubular batteries offer a longer lifespan of up to 5 years. As they use deep charging cycles, the batteries offer an efficient and low maintenance performance.

When compared to flat plate batteries, the tubular batteries are a bit pricey and might cost you around Rs. 9,000 – 30,000.

Best suited for home inverter system.

3. Sealed maintenance free battery

sealed maintenance free battery

They are perfect for high critical workloads.

These batteries are completely safe to use and do not emit any poisonous or harmful gases. If you don’t have time to refill the distilled water regularly, this is the best choice for you.

The only downside of this battery is they are pretty expensive and they don’t offer a longer life span, unlike tubular batteries.

For our Power requirement, to backup 3 fan, 3 LED tube light, 2 LED bulb on inverter.

We select 600 VA inverter of any best brand. it cost nearby 4000 Rs.
Tubular type battery of 300 Ah. it cost nearby 7000 Rs

total cost for inverter system is 11000 Rs.
