Before we talk about working and construction or codes and values and application of ceramic capacitor first we understand what is a capacitor is short ,

CAPACITORS :

A capacitor consists of two metal plates, separated by an insulating layer called the dielectric. It has the ability of storing a quantity of electricity as an excess of electrons on one plate and a defi ciency on the other.

The p.d. or voltage which may be maintained across the plates of a capacitor is determined by the type and thickness of the dielectric medium. Capacitor manufacturers usually indicate the maximum safe working voltage for their products.

Capacitors are classified by the type of dielectric material used in their construction.

Now i hope you understand about capacitors what they are lets discuss about What is Ceramic Capacitor? ,Working and Construction of ceramic capacitor, code value and symbol of ceramic capacitor , Application of ceramic capacitor.

What is Ceramic Capacitor?

symbol of ceramic capacitor

The name of capacitor give an idea about the ceramic capacitor, ceramic is a insulated material

In ceramic capacitor ceramic is use as a dielectric material. It is a fix value capacitor. In ceramic capacitor metal layer acting as the electrodes.
The composition of the ceramic material used is defines the electrical behavior and applications of ceramic capacitor.ceramic is a insulated material

There is a different types of ceramic capacitor

  • 1. Ceramic tubular capacitors
  • 2. Barrier layer capacitors
  • 3. Multi-layer chip capacitor (MLCC)
  • 4. Multi-layer Ceramic disc capacitor
Years ago ceramic tubular capacitors ,barrier layer capacitors are used, but due to is complex and bigger size this type of ceramic capacitors are not in used in this compact electronic world.

In this fast and compact electronic world we use multi layer ceramic capacitor like multi-layer chip capacitor (MLCC),ceramic disc capacitor.

Production of the multi layer chip capacitor(MLCC) is about 1000 billion per year due to its compact size and wide application area.they are made in surface mounted(SMC) technology.

Ceramic capacitors are manufactured for very small capacitance value like 1 nF to 1 uF , it can although values up to 100µF are possible ,ceramic capacitors are non polarized capacitor, so we can connect it to AC supplie safely.

Ceramic capacitors have very good frequency response due to low parasitic effects.

Types of capacitor:

There are two most commonly used types of ceramic capacitor
  • 1. Multi-layer chip capacitor (MLCC)
  • 2. Multi- layer ceramic disc capacitor

Multi-layer chip capacitor (MLCC):

Multi-layer chip capacitor (MLCC

The MLCCs are made with Paraelectric and Ferroelectric materials mix and alternatively layered with metal contacts.

After completion of the layering process, the device is brought to a high temperature and the mixture is cool down for some time ,and as result of the process we get a ceramic material of desired properties.

Finally, the resulting capacitor consists of many smaller capacitors connected in parallel, this leads to an increase in capacitance and power capacity .

The MLCCs consist of more than 500 layers, with the minimum layer thickness of approximately 0.5 microns. As technology progresses, the thickness of the layer decreases and capacitance increases in the same volume.

Ceramic capacitor dielectrics vary from one manufacturer to another, but common compounds include titanium dioxide, Strontium Titanate, and Barium Titanate are for all

Multi- layer Ceramic disc Capacitor :

Multi- layer ceramic disc capacitor

Ceramic disc capacitors are made by coating a ceramic disc with silver contacts on both sides.these devices can be made from multiple layers in order To achieve larger capacitance.

Ceramic disc capacitors are usually through-hole components and are falling out of favor due to their size.Ceramic disc capacitors have a capacitance value of 10 pF to 100μF with a wide variety of voltage ratings, between 16 volts to 15 kV and more.

Based on the working temperature range, temperature drift, tolerance different ceramic capacitor classes are defined.

Class 1 ceramic capacitors

Class 1 ceramic capacitors are used where high stability and low losses are required. They are very accurate and the capacitance value is stable in regard to applied voltage, temperature and frequency.

Capacitors has a capacitance thermal stability of  ±0.54%.
The total temperature range :- -55 to +125 °C.
Accuracy : high

Tolerances:  low as 1% capacitance change

Class 2 ceramic capacitors

Class 2 ceramic capacitors prefer for better performance and for high efficiency, but its has lower accuracy and stability. As a result, they are normally used for decoupling, coupling and bypass applications where accuracy is not of prime importance.

Temperature range: -50 C to +85 C
Dissipation factor: 2.5%.
Accuracy: average to poor

Class 3 ceramic capacitors

Class 3 ceramic capacitors prefer for high efficiency with poor accuracy and a low dissipation factor. It cannot withstand high voltages. The dielectric used is often Barium Titanate .This type  is typically used for decoupling or in other power supply applications where accuracy is not an issue.

Class 3 capacitor will change its
Temperature range : +10 C to +55 C.
Dissipation factor: 3 to 5%.
Accuracy: average to poor
Tolerances: capacitance change by -22% to +50%

Calculation of value from code of ceramic capacitor

It is very easy to decode the code printed on a ceramic capacitor. We use here the EIA coding system
follow the step

  • 1. The first two significant digits signify the first two digits of the actual capacitance value which is 47
  • 2. The third digit is the multiplier for in above figure its 3 that means we need to multiply 47 by 1000
  • 3. The letter J implies the tolerance of ±5 %
  • 4. Since this is the EIA coding system, the value will be in picofarads. Therefore, the value of the capacitor above is 47000 pF ±5 %.

Applications of Ceramic Capacitors

  • 1. In dc to dc converters in a control circuit of controlling duty cycle
  • 2. In timer circuits , counter circuits
  • 3. Ceramic disc capacitors are used across brush DC motors to minimize RF noise.
  • 4. Surface mount capacitors are often used in printed circuit boards and high-density applications.
  • 5. Ceramic capacitors can also be used as a general-purpose capacitor, because of their non-polarity and are available in a large variety of capacitance, voltage ratings, and sizes.
  • 6. MLCC used in printed circuit boards (PCB) are rated for voltages from only a few volts up to several hundreds of volts, depending on the application.
  • 7. Ceramic capacitors are majorly used in the resonant circuit in transmitter stations and receiving stations .
  • 8. Class 2 high-power capacitors are used in high voltage laser power supplies, power circuit breakers, induction furnaces, etc.
